Welcome

Bulbagarden Archives logo.png
Welcome to the Bulbagarden Archives, Jello!

As a new user, you may wish to learn a few things that will be useful in your uploading:

The Manual of Style, or MoS, outlines the format and guidelines of all images on Bulbagarden Archives.

All of our administrators are here to help! Talk to them if you have any questions or problems with the Archives.

Tagging images with correct licenses and categories is a must. These guidelines will help you learn more about tagging images.

Miscellaneous
  • Please read the checklist when you upload media files. The checklist is there to make sure you are doing everything necessary when uploading said media files.
  • Be sure to tag and categorize all images. This helps organize the vast amount of images we have here.
  • Check if your image already exists by searching through categories, and Bulbapedia pages. This action will help prevent unnecessary duplicates from appearing.
  • When adding a licensing tag to anime or game screenshots, please avoid just choosing "Screenshot". This is not descriptive and places the images in the wrong category. Make sure to choose "Screenshot from a Pokémon game," or "Screenshot from the Pokémon anime." This will put them in the right categories, and help keep the Archives clean.
  • Does your image have a purpose? Will you be using it on a Bulbagarden Project? Avoid uploading images because you think they are "Cute" or "Awesome". That clutters the Archives.
  • Personal images are limited to two for each User. Personal images include personal logos, personal trainer sprites, drawings, trainer cards and mostly any image that would only be used in the User: namespace and have no encyclopedic value to Bulbagarden and its affiliates. Please tag these with the {{i-Personal}} template for easier organization. Under no circumstance should a photograph of one's self ever be uploaded onto Bulbagarden Archives.
  • In addition, please upload images with meaningful names. Names that are just numbers, for example, do not describe anything about the image, and can make it difficult for searchers. Names are just as important as licenses and categories, so make them descriptive. Please be sure that the filenames contain alphanumeric characters only.
  • Due to the many automated templates used on the wiki, lowercase extensions are imperative. That means jpg and png instead of JPG and PNG. It looks cleaner, it works better, and it does not cause any problems. Make sure to always use lowercase extensions.
  • If you're confused about the requirements for uploading files, have a look at this guide.
Thank you, and have a good time uploading here!

Be careful!

2 probs when you were changing the Stadium images into transparency, the first of which will involve me going and reverting them all, redoing them, and then fixing problem 2.

  • As evidenced easily at File:Stadium003.png, some aspects (such as Venusaur's fangs) were accidentally removed when making transparent.
  • When you make them transparent, take away the needs transparency template.

Thank you, immewnitythemew 00:36, 7 January 2010 (UTC)

Sorry about that, I should have been more careful. I'll try going around and fixing them again if they haven't been already. As for 2, I was not aware that I could remove the templates; I thought that kind of thing was left to the admins. Thanks for pointing that out. --Jello 04:31, 8 January 2010 (UTC)
It's okay. I forget about templates all the time. It was mostly just problem one. And, as I've also been told, only welcome users that have contributed. Thanks!--immewnitythemew 23:58, 20 January 2010 (UTC)

Location pics

Hey. I could use some help on getting location pics. Interested? --Hmdwgf 18:26, 3 February 2010 (UTC)

Sure, I have been adding images to that area from time to time. What do you have in mind? Jello 18:31, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Great. This and this. This is an almighty task, and that's why I've been rounding up a few trustworthy users who can get good quality pics for these articles. --Hmdwgf 18:40, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
Fantastic. Just keep it coming, and we can get this done faster than you can say "Pokémon". --Hmdwgf 19:23, 3 February 2010 (UTC)
You've been doing a great job so far and I really need your help getting these location and header pics. Just keep them coming, especially those Pikachu shorts pics. --Hmdwgf 16:08, 6 February 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, I'm just waiting for the rest of the episodes to download which is taking quite a while, also, I can't seem to find anything about the newer Pikachu shorts. :( Jello 23:20, 7 February 2010 (UTC)
So you do know about that... the talk pages are not the places to talk about that. I'll e-mail you a few source pages. --Hmdwgf 17:35, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

Thank you

For sifting through all those images and putting the delete tag on the ones that weren't used. However, when you replaced the series head image template on the other, you should have put on {{i-Fairuse-screenshot-anime}}, and not just {{i-Fairuse-anime}}. The latter is only for things like posters, artwork, and any non screenshot, anime related material. Do you mind going through and fixing the ones you just did? MaverickNate 20:49, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Ah, sorry about that, I knew I was missing something. I'll go fix them again. Thanks --Jello 20:51, 7 February 2010 (UTC)

Hey

Thanks for your help and all, but can you please ensure that the sprites are actually unused? The one I just moved is currently being used by someone's userpage... ht14 23:14, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

Alrighty no problem, I thought it would be okay since it only linked to a user page, so shouldn't that be classified under personal images? Sorry for any trouble. Jello 23:18, 11 February 2010 (UTC)
Check your e-mail MaverickNate 23:20, 11 February 2010 (UTC)

...now it's gone to the point where it links to the mainspace... ht14 04:36, 12 February 2010 (UTC)

I've replaced those images with the .pngs on their pages. It shouldn't be a problem now hopefully. Jello 05:20, 12 February 2010 (UTC)
When you upload the images, you want breaks in between the lines, not spaces. Just an enter break would be fine, you don't need to go all fancy and use the <br>. Mind doing that from now on? MaverickNate 23:26, 13 February 2010 (UTC)
Thank you! =] MaverickNate 23:56, 13 February 2010 (UTC)

Few things to Ask !!!

Hey Jello, firstly I would like to say thank you for all the help. Well, I succeeded in solving Art Work from Red & Green problem but I am still facing some problem in spirits. I can easily make them transparent but the frames aren't working properly. I would like to ask few questions.

1. Is it necessary/must to set the speed to 250ms?
2. Is it necessary to write Layer 1 (250ms) (replace)? Can I write COMBINE instead of REPLACE?
3. How to confirm the correct size of the images? (32px x 48px etc.)
4. Can I save the images as animation?
Thank You. --♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 15:31, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
No problem!
1. Well, if you're working from already animated frames, it's best to leave the set speed. However, if you're working from scratch, figuring out the timing can be difficult, especially with a lot of frames.
2. 'Replace' is what clears the previous frame. This is what you want in your animations, seeing as how yours had all the frames squished together. 'Combine' does what it's named for, it combines all the frames together, and doesn't clear the previous frames.
3. The correct size depends on what's the standard here. I looked over at User:UltimateSephiroth/Sprites to get some kind of idea, since that user seems more informant about these kinds of things. You can look at the majority size of the sprites uploaded, that should also give you a good guess. If you're really unsure, it'd be best to ask an admin.
4. Yes, you can save as 'animation'.
Also, I just looked over the animated sprites you uploaded and noticed a few more things. You need to be careful that you get all the white parts out. Some of the frames, you seemed to have missed a spot. Try hiding all the layers and then working on one frame at a time. You can also preview the animation by going to 'Filters' → 'Animation' → 'Playback'. It's a tedious task, but it's better to get it right the first time. --JelloTalk 20:18, 17 February 2010 (UTC)
Got it. I will again try to follow your steps and I will try to ask User:UltimateSephiroth/Sprites about this stuff too. Thanks again :) --♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 02:38, 18 February 2010 (UTC)

Er hem.

Make sure that when adding the gamesprite template, they are the sprites for those games only. I believe all the Pokémon found in the regional dex of Platinum have their separate sprites. Simply put, look on the bottom of each sprite to see if it says duplicate. Then follow accordingly. Or, you can have a look at this. Also, it's i-Fairuse-sprite-game, not i-Fairuse-sprite-game-alt. Minor thing. ht14 21:38, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

Okay, thank you! I was basically following the format for the other Gen IV sprites and it had the -alt thing at the end. JelloTalk 21:44, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Are you sure you're not looking at the animated ones? Those have the -alt in the end. ht14 21:47, 28 February 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, sorry, I guess that was the problem. JelloTalk 21:55, 28 February 2010 (UTC)

OD Sprites

Can you resize the Amity Square ones so they are the same as the HGSS ones? ht14 04:50, 11 March 2010 (UTC)

You sure about that? What size do you want them? 32x32? JelloTalk 15:54, 12 March 2010 (UTC)
Guess so, consistency and all. ht14 04:31, 13 March 2010 (UTC)

OD Sprites (2)

See your BP talk page. ht14 23:14, 29 April 2010 (UTC)

According to TTE, only Venusaur, Pikachu, Meganium, Wobbuffet, Steelix, Heracross, Combee, Gible, Gabite, Garchomp, Hippopotas, and Hippowdon have alternate sprites. ht14 20:32, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

I see, I guess that explains the duplicate file. Thanks. JelloTalk 20:42, 30 April 2010 (UTC)

CAN YA?

WELL? TTEchidna 04:33, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

YEAH, I CAN. JelloTalk 04:34, 20 May 2010 (UTC)

Hey

Just wonderin'. What powers do you have as admin? ht14 00:06, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Whatever Junior Administrators are supposed to have. [1] lists what I can do. I can move stuff, lol. JelloTalk 00:10, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Don't you feel special. :] What of this: Delete and undelete specific revisions of pages (deleterevision)? ht14 00:13, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
I can't delete stuff if that's what you're asking. But I can hide/delete specific revisions of files. JelloTalk 00:18, 22 May 2010 (UTC)
Ahh. Thanks for this clarification. I'm still new to this "New Admin" thing. :) ht14 00:25, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Utilizing {{gamesprite}}

Dual games such as HGSS and FRLG have s in the end. For instance, the template for Bulbasaur's FRLG sprite would be as follows: {{gamesprite|001|Bulbasaur|FireRed and LeafGreen|s}}. The (s) is to avoid rdrs. ht14 00:40, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Haha, thank you! Didn't see that. JelloTalk 00:40, 22 May 2010 (UTC)

Utilizing {{delete}}

While I agree with some of your ideas, realize that some images are meant to be personal images that are labeled incorrectly, licensing-wise. Don't worry, you're doing fine. ht14 21:49, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

I was thinking that too, that's why I left that reason in the way that I did. Those images were meant for a totally useless article on Bulbapedia that got deleted anyway. JelloTalk 21:54, 23 May 2010 (UTC)
I left a talk page comment. I'll wait for about a week before deleting them. ht14 21:59, 23 May 2010 (UTC)

One more thing. Maybe it's just me, but I'd prefer if you typed in the name of the file that is the duplicate of the file-to-be deleted is. ht14 20:24, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

I usually do that, but in this case it was already listed as a duplicate file. JelloTalk 20:57, 4 July 2010 (UTC)

Thanks

For the help in the category thing. I was going to do it later tonight, but now all I need to to is the little monsters and categorize the uncategorized.--immewnitythemew 19:52, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

No problem, we should be finished with this soon, since PsychicRider is helping out as well. JelloTalk 19:54, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
...is it done already? Wow, that was fast! Thanks for the help!--immewnitythemew 20:18, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

Resizing/JPG->PNG

Try not to do either. If an image doesn't fit as the original PNG, convert to JPG. Yes, there will be a slight loss of quality, but not too bad. If the original is a JPG, don't convert it to PNG. The image doesn't look any better, the file's bigger, and, to compensate for the 2MB limit, you must resize. The Ranger: Guardian Signs box art and the Ecruteak City landscape were both subjected to this. Do what I did for File:HGSS Johto.jpg and delete the PNG, with changing any PNG link to JPG. Just because PNG thumbnails better doesn't mean that a loss of quality another way will compensate.--immewnitythemew 19:51, 21 June 2010 (UTC)

Sorry if this sounded rude; I didn't mean for it to. Here are a bunch of HUGE cookies to make up for it! :D--immewnitythemew 20:58, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
Hey, don't worry about it. I know you have a valid point. I have found that you can compress pngs, but that unfortunately takes a very long time. The Archives' rules and policy aren't that clear, and until we have something set in stone, I'm not sure what I should say or do. I would like to point out though, that extremely hi-res images are unnecessary, since these resolutions are meant for print. And in a way, it seems to be catering to and making it easier for people who pirate games and things along that line. As you can see, on Wikipedia, images aren't that hi-res because they claim fair use, and it isn't fair to Nintendo and other companies if we're uploading such extremely hi-res images. But I know these rules and policies don't apply here, so I'm just waiting on official word from higher ups. So as you can see, I was trying to go for a middle ground in terms of fair use. If you have any suggestions, I'm sure other administrators wouldn't mind hearing it. Thanks. JelloTalk 21:48, 29 June 2010 (UTC)
The thing is, with these images... they came directly from Nintendo. Anyone can access them (yes, username and password are needed, but all I did was email the PR guy and he gave them to me). Plus, Nate is happy with high-res, just not high-res scans, like cards (as they're not that big originally).--immewnitythemew 22:15, 29 June 2010 (UTC)

Hate to burst your bubble... *pop*

...but the new rules are maximum resolution of 1080, not 1084, as you've done on multiple images. (probably confused it with 1024)--immewnitythemew 01:01, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Oh my gosh, thanks for telling me, Nate just told me about it. I probably didn't read it properly. xD. I'll go ahead and re-upload them. JelloTalk 01:16, 2 July 2010 (UTC)

Help wanted

How would you like to help me in centering the GS Sugimori art that I uploaded? They're better quality, but not centered... ht14 02:36, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Sure thing, do you want me to just crop it? There seems to be extra white stuff around it. JelloTalk 03:28, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Whatever works for you. ht14 22:06, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
Start from Remoraid for the updates, but also add Umbreon to your schedule if it's ok with you. ht14 02:56, 15 July 2010 (UTC)

Size limits

Don't forget: max resolution size is 1080 x 1080. ht14 22:07, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Yes, I know. I'll resize them later, I've been kind of busy getting these images up AND writing the article on BN. D: JelloTalk 22:12, 13 July 2010 (UTC)
All right, just making sure. :] ht14 22:14, 13 July 2010 (UTC)

Re: Deletion of Rankurusu sprite

I was under the impression that the sprites on Serebii were ripped from actual screenshots and not created by Serebii. If this is indeed the case, then they are fair use and Serebii does not own them. The sprite in question appears to be ripped from a higher-quality version of this screenshot. I'm not sure what you meant by "Serebii doesn't like his images being stolen". Like it or not, the images Serebii posts do not belong to him and anyone here has every right to do with them what they will.--Bad Wolf 02:07, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

While I understand Serebii does not own those images, the fact is those screenshots came from his site. He was able to get them because a press kit was sent to him. As of right now Bulbanews does not get those press kits, but we are in the works of getting them ourselves. Unless bigger screenshots appear on the official websites, then we can't have these sprites uploaded for now. Also, that image was the wrong size anyway (90x90), when it should have been 80x80 pixels. You're welcome to bring this argument to Serebii himself and see what he says. JelloTalk 02:16, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

Re: About jpgs

Okay thanks, so are you gonna delete the converted ones, although I made them transparent to replace the ones used on pedia that aren't transparent and smaller. Is making the white backgrounds of png files preferred too?. --Renzo493 6:19, July 18, 2010 (UTC)

I won't delete those ones, since we don't have anything else to replace them, but yeah. If you make the backgrounds transparent, that is preferred. JelloTalk 06:25, 18 July 2010 (UTC)

BW starters

I already uploaded their anime pictures at Image:Tsutarja (anime).jpg, Image:Pokabu (anime).jpg, and Image:Mijumaru (anime).jpg. --Shiny Noctowl 01:53, 25 July 2010 (UTC)

OD Sprites (3)

How many have you got to go? たかはり 07:03, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Well, if you look here: User:Ht14/Trainer you can see what I have left to do. Pretty much Gen III and IV, and then after that all the shiny sprites from Gen I-IV. So, it's still a lot. JelloTalk 19:18, 26 July 2010 (UTC)

Re: Hi

No I don't mind, in fact I'll upload the image right now.--Starman125 00:15, 30 July 2010 (UTC)

Um, the Igglybuff article (the Sprites section) was showing a redlink, that's why I uploaded the image. Besides, the other image said it was the same sprite.--Starman125 18:34, 31 July 2010 (UTC)
It's alright, the file should have actually been redirected, that's why the redlink was appearing on it's page. JelloTalk 19:03, 31 July 2010 (UTC)

Image "release"

Was it leaked July 6 or July 7 (JP)? If it's the latter, do we still consider it July 7 or what? ht14 02:24, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

We go by Japan time so, July 7th? Just make sure it clear that it's Japan time. Jellotalk 02:38, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
In that case, the article... I'll fix it. ht14 02:38, 7 August 2010 (UTC)
Or not... thanks for confirming this with me though. I had a feeling of this. ht14 02:43, 7 August 2010 (UTC)

Old Revisions

Hey Jel, can you delete the old revisions of Ash's Infernape pic? There are total 14 versions of the same pic (re-uploaded, again and again and again *sigh*). Can you please delete the old revisions? They are not needed anymore. ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 13:49, 16 August 2010 (UTC)

Sure thing, I've gone ahead and deleted what I could. Jellotalk 18:17, 16 August 2010 (UTC)
Thanks, btw there are some other pics waiting for you. I mean to say that they've the same multiple revisions problem specially the headers of Ash's Pokémon, their old revisions aren't in any use so they should be removed as well :) ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 01:08, 17 August 2010 (UTC)
Hey Jel, you might wanna look at this. Its full of useless old versions not to mention the low quality. It would be nice if you keep the newer revisions and delete the old ones, thanks. ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 13:42, 18 August 2010 (UTC)
Hey Adyniz, just thought I'd let you know, I can't just wipe everything from the history, I'm only going after duplicates, since I've gotten into a little bit of trouble with Nate. Jellotalk 17:49, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Nope, it's alright, I was just finishing up and now I'm headed for bed xD If you have screenshots of the older anime episodes, see if any of the articles need them. Thanks. Jellotalk 06:33, 18 August 2010 (UTC)

Oh wow, I didn't even notice that. Thanks! Jellotalk 23:48, 21 August 2010 (UTC)

New "project" idea

Hey Jello, since your the Queen of the archives, I thought I'd ask you: what do you say about moving all of these images to File:(move name with spaces).png? It's been bugging me for a while and I've just re-uploaded a bunch of them that are HGSS screenshots into files with names like File:(movenameDPPt).png. Its just a huge thought. Everything else has specific names. These move images are a bit very unorganised. I'd do it myself, but I don't have admin privileges and therefore can't move any files :(
Thanks Jellybean --たかはり 11:06, 28 August 2010 (UTC)

The policy has been the following: Images from the most recent game are "File:Move.png". Images from previous generations are "File:Move GEN##". (File:Cut III.png) Images that changed withing a generation get the game codes. (File:Aeroblast DP.png) MaverickNate 12:30, 28 August 2010 (UTC)
But do we even need moves images from older generations? Do they even get used? I just think it would be better if we just had a screenshot of the latest game called File:Absorb.png. Obvioulsy I'm not gonna argue with you guys, but I just think this would be a better way to do it. たかはり 02:19, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
Yeah, we do, we're an encyclopedia after all. We are looking to preserve moves from older generations, and Nate has said that there are plans to implement a template to fit all this in the moves pages, so it would be preferred if you didn't upload over the older ones, and instead upload the newer ones at their appropriate name. Jellotalk 03:20, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
Well, I'd like to help by supplying the replacement move images, with accurate colour, PNG compression and no botched-up transparencies. However, I can't upload over preexisting images since I'm a new user around here. Next up - Tackle!--Turtwig Lover 05:16, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
Understood! I'll help Turtwig Lover upload his screenshots with the appropriate name. たかはり 09:23, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
I've just been watching the Recent Changes. I understand fully now, and I like how this system works. I've made a template for use when uploading these images, what does everyone think? たかはり 09:44, 29 August 2010 (UTC)
One more thing (sorry Jell): Should we make categories such as Category:Gen I moves (game), Category:Gen II moves (game) etc? I'll leave you alone now xD たかはり 09:46, 29 August 2010 (UTC)

Assistance

Hey Jel, I was thinking to upload the transparent versions of these images because there are heck a lot of images which are not transparent and I would like to start working on the non-transparent images. Just wanted to confirm that is it ok or not? By the way, I've noticed that a lot of pics are not in the "transparency needed" category which should be there. Why is that so? Just asking :) ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 15:41, 4 October 2010 (UTC)

Yeah, go ahead. As for the transparency needed category, it has to be put in there manually by other users. There's no way to detect if an image is transparent or not automatically. Jellotalk 15:44, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Oh, got it. Thanks ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 15:48, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
One question, what's that Patrolled option for? I mean, what's its use? ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 19:16, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Not sure really, I never used it. From what I heard from others it's kinda useless. It just marks an edit as good or something. Jellotalk 20:20, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
On an ideal wiki, we'd use patrol to let other staff know the edit has been verified. It really probably ought to be used more, especially on Bulbapedia. —darklordtrom 21:27, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Oh, so that's how it works. ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 21:49, 4 October 2010 (UTC)
Have another question, isn't there any template named {{User Archives Staff|JAdmin}} just like we have {{User Bulbapedia Staff|JAdmin}} for bulbapedia JAs. Just asking. ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 05:19, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Nope, none of that stuff. You can make a custom one if you like for your own userspace. Jellotalk 05:31, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Well, I'm ultra bad at this template thingy but I guess there's always a first time for everything. I might try to make one *debut alert*. ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 05:34, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
Here we go. Is it ok? ♫♪AdyNiz♪♫ 05:43, 9 October 2010 (UTC)
