== APNG vs. WebM == | |||
More browsers support WebM (Edge, Chrome, Firefox, Opera; IE9+ and Safari with plugins) than APNG (Firefox, Safari). Since both formats fulfill the same purpose in practice, we should consider the addition of WebM support and replace our APNG stuff with WebM files. SatoMew2 (talk) 15:38, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
:WebM is a video format. I doubt replacing thousands of animated PNGs with videos is an adequate solution, due to MediaWiki's terrible video handling capabilities. (We can't even put Pokémon cries on their pages, let alone 20 videos.) --Abcboy (talk) 15:53, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
::A video is a moving visual image so animated image files are indistinguishable from video files as far as most people are concerned. They're both a bunch of frames being moved sequentially at a certain rate. And how is MediaWiki poor at handling this? Wikipedia and TCRF seem to manage it just fine. :::In what world is this a solution and not overkill? --Abcboy (talk) 16:56, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
::::Or you can just use GIFs for goddamn sprites. What's the point of using a format that barely anyone supports? If you think people are going to change browsers just so they can play animated images on a single site, then you're delusional.
::::TCRF's articles have inline audio and Wikipedia's articles have inline video and audio so your claim that you need to present it as a pop-up UI is incorrect. Plus HTML5 video allows you to preload, autoplay, and loop videos automatically. Audio streams are not required either; after all, they're not even allowed on sites like 4chan hence tools like this one to remove them from the files whenever necessary. SatoMew2 (talk) 17:04, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
:::::If I may throw in my few cents on the matter, I would agree with ABCboy.
:::::If you look, APNG is supported by almost all browsers (only Internet Explorer does not support it in any method). Also, before I got an extension to view APNG with Chrome, I didn't know that the moves were actually animated images. Seeing them as static images didn't detract from what I got from those pages.
:::::Second, looking at the above image, the black square with a play button in it will not work; it looks tacky. If we do allow images in the WebM format, they would need to be images that are absolutely necessary to view the animation to understand the principle or point of a page. Few, if not no images need that.
:::::As for the GIF idea, the more extensions that we allow in the archives, the easier it is for duplicate images to hide. In cleaning out the GIFs, you won't believe how many unused and duplicate images I found. Also, if we were to convert just the sprites to GIF, that would take months to do and really isn't worth it (especially when it took me about a month and a half to convert and upload the APNG versions of the Emerald and Crystal sprites). Adamws (talk) 18:27, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
::::::Abcboy's mistake was to use <code>thumb</code> instead of <code>frame</code>, not to mention that using WebM for sprites would be purposeless. And no, APNG is not supported by almost all browsers. Native support is more important than third-party support, and this definitely favors WebM. The only cross-platform browser with native APNG support is Firefox (Safari is exclusive to OS X and iOS; Presto-based Opera is legacy and deprecated; non-Firefox Gecko-based browsers naturally support APNG since their engine is the same as Firefox's). Internet Explorer and MSHTML (Trident), for better or for worse, are considered obsolete as well because of Edge and EdgeHTML.
::::::Why are you only focusing on sprites? Move animations, for starters, need to be animated and WebM is a perfect and interoperable solution. Audio would also be a welcome addition since you might as well let people listen to the animation if they're going to watch it anyway.
::::::Converting the sprites from GIF to APNG was and is a mistake. SatoMew2 (talk) 18:47, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

== Can we make episodes as screenshot categories? ==
Can we? I could not find any such category. I found one huge Category of Anime screenshots. It is unnavigable. Somebody might also duplicate screenshots if he doesn't know they are already uploaded. == Autoconfirmation for longtime Bulbapedia members ==
I don't really understand why autoconfirmation is separate for the Archives and Bulbapedia. The autoconfirmation process is to ensure that the system does not get spammed or abused by new accounts. Why isn't it sufficient to be a longtime member of Bulbepedia? I've made tons of edits on the main Bulbapedia space. Why isn't that good enough?
If the answer is "we don't know how to combine autoconfirmation on Bulbapedia and Archives", then I can understand it. Otherwise, I just don't. There's very little to do here aside from uploading images. Essentially you're making new users jump through unnecessary hoops, just because they want to contribute to the project in some way. Dada (talk) 12:53, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
:I have to apologize for being so confrontational here in this post. I felt it was a bit unfair that my edits on Bulbapedia would not count for proving that my account should be trusted enough to be allowed to upload. As it turns out I was wrong, and it is possible to get manually confirmed, which was done by an admin after I raised the point on the Discord. I do think it would be good if this possibility was listed on the FAQ. Dada (talk) 13:22, 25 January 2020 (UTC) |

Animated images
I fail to see how all these PNG images are supposed to be "animated" Please explain? They dont animate in my browser, but are PNGs supposed to be able to animate? Blake Talk·Edits 22:00, 9 November 2009 (UTC)
Spread the word
To avoid something like that happen again, I suggest we either;
- Add it to the welcome template for new users
or
- add it on the main page
This way, there's a slight chance it won't happen again.--Force Fire 12:13, 30 November 2009 (UTC)
Gen II trainer sprites
First, they should be in png format, no? Second, the format is 56 x 56, no? If so for both, we have gif files and incorrect-sized png files. Suggestions, anyone? ht14 01:57, 26 December 2009 (UTC)
What's the deal with these images?
Just was checking Category:Game maps and found a bunch of REALLY crappy images. No articles link to them, and they basically consist of every imaginable kind of badness game maps can have.
The full list: Eterna_City.jpg Floaroma_Town.jpg Fuego_Ironworks.jpg Hearthome_City.jpg HearthomeCityIngame.jpg Lake Acuity.jpg Lake Valor.jpg Lake Verity.gif Pokemon League.jpg Route 201.jpg Route 204.jpg Route 208.jpg Route 221.jpg Shino Map.jpg
I'm relatively new to the archives, so I'm not sure what to do. Should we scrap them, or is there some hidden purpose to them? Please help! --AndyPKMN 18:33, 15 February 2010 (UTC)
The totals at the top of the page
I've noticed some inconsistencies with the totals at the top of this page, which actually mean that we're closer to the correct number of sprites than we seem. For instance:
- Gen I: All good obviously
- Gold: Though it currently says we are 2 sprites over, the "correct" total fails to take into account the japanese sprites of Jynx and Aipom. The same holds true for the Gold shinies!
- Silver: Same problem as Gold except it's Jynx and Slowpoke. Silver shiny too!
- Crystal: Just Jynx this time. This also covers Crystal shiny (where we dont have the right number either way) and Gen II back
Gen II normal and shiny.
- Ruby and Sapphire: I don't know where that total came from but without Castform (which seems to have been forgotten) it's 413 but with... 416, the total we have. Same for Shiny except Castform probably shouldn't be counted... The total of 416 should also work for Emerald (once again unless Castform is discarded) at which point it's 413.
- FireRed and LeafGreen: Should have 1 more than RSE (417) because of the added Deoxys Forme. With the shinies being 414 if we dont put Castform.
- Gen 3 back should be 419 as it would contain all the Deoxys plus the other 416. Shiny is 416.--MisterE13 02:05, 2 June 2010 (UTC)
- I agree with most of your points except the last two. Also, the top ones are made for general sprites. That way those who find missing ones will find them and just upload them. In regards to your last two points... there are sprite changes between RS and FRLG, such as minor colorings and change in images (see File:Spr b 3r 003.png and File:Spr b 3f 003.png. ht14 22:20, 2 June 2010 (UTC)

The math is commented out after my proposed totals (correct me if I forgot anything). Some of it is also personal preferance, do we include Castform's unanimated sprites into the Emerald category? What about the Shiny categories (as they are the alternate sprites of shiny Castform as well)? This also includes my firm belief that the backsprite categories are in need of a serious overhaul.--MisterE13 00:55, 4 June 2010 (UTC)
Resizes
If I read correctly, the anime screenshots I'm uploading in 1280x720 are allowed, right? I've been re-screenshoting all of the previous images that were restricted by the previous size cap.--Cubic Question 20:29, 7 September 2010 (UTC)
- 1280 and below is what is generally acceptable. That is the cap size for the majority of images. MaverickNate 01:04, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
- I think everyone on the Archives needs to learn the wonders of compressing their images. I wouldn't necessarily say the resolution is the problem but rather the file size. Not everyone has high speed internet, believe it or not. A few simple free tools can do wonders. I would advise you all who like to keep their big images to do a simple Google search about compressing .pngs (OptiPNG is one example, that has plugins available for Paint.NET and GIMP, both of which are free programs) —♥ Jellotalk 01:27, 8 September 2010 (UTC)
- I was actually going to re-compress the ones I uploaded, but I didn't want to make too many unnecessary edits to each file. I suppose that's better than slow-loading images, though.. D:--Cubic Question 01:59, 8 September 2010 (UTC)

Help!!!
Hey i was trying to attach a file (File:Darkrai Dark Void multiple balls.png or something like that) to my userpage back at bulbapedia, but it was an older version, and i was having trouble embedding it, so i clikced revert! it did something totally unexpected! How can i delete the revert? --Desukaan563 10:04, 27 November 2010 (UTC)
- Often the Bulbapedia server and Archives server take a while to synchronize, so it doesn't always show up straight away. Which version of the image did you want to use? The one with the dark sky or blue sky? If you want the dark sky, you will need to upload it elsewhere as a personal image, because Bulbapedia prefers the dark sky for its projects. --SnorlaxMonster 11:31, 27 November 2010 (UTC)

Total errors
In the sprite template above, the totals for the Gold sprites, Shiny Gold sprites, Silver sprites, Shiny Silver sprites, Gold/Silver back sprites, Gold/Silver Shiny back sprites, and Diamond and Pearl sprites, are smaller than the actual number of images. Vuvuzela2010 17:45, 6 September 2011 (UTC)
Wait.
The number of Unowns is wrong. It said "<!--251 + 25 Unown + Jynx JP + Slowpoke JP-->" and "<!--386 + 27 Unown + 3 Castform-->", while there is 26 and 28, respectively. Marked +-+-+ 18:21, 6 September 2011 (UTC)

Missing Pokémon
- Emerald front sprites - Unown (though we have 4 non-Shiny and only one Shiny)
- Colosseum menu - Unowns, including the A; there is no Shiny for menu whatsoever!
- Colosseum box - Shiny is few, so it's not to find what's missing...
- XD, FRLG shiny back, PtHGSS shiny back also easy as MANY are missing.
No idea about the "current game sprites", though. Marked +-+-+ (talk) 11:53, 16 August 2012 (UTC)
Trainer Sprite Project
Perceptive individuals may notice that filenames for Trainer sprites are extremely inconsistent, especially in Generations I through IV. So, for the month of September, the Bulbagarden Archives will be undergoing an extremely large-scale project to standardize the filenames of all Trainer sprites.
This project will be conducted in three stages, with each stage requiring 100% completion before advancement to the next stage. The first and final stages will be restricted to staff only, as they require user rights specific to Bulbagarden Archives staff. The second stage, however, will allow open assistance from any volunteers.
Details regarding each of the three stages will be noted in the subsections below. Any questions or concerns regarding this project may be asked here.
Stage 1 - Relocation (Complete)
The first stage of the Trainer sprite project will be conducted exclusively on the Bulbagarden Archives, and is restricted to members of the Bulbagarden Archives staff. This stage of the project will consist entirely of relocating Trainer sprites from their current filenames to their standardized filenames as noted on the Manual of Style.
Redirects must be created through these file moves, and the redirects must not be modified in any way that will prevent the redirect from doing its intended job.
Stage 2 - Correction (Complete)
The second stage of the Trainer sprite project will be conducted throughout the Bulbawiki Network, though dominantly on Bulbapedia. This stage of the project consists exclusively of replacing the old and depreciated file links with proper links to the new standardized filenames. Some files may be in GIF format on Bulbapedia, these are to be replaced with their PNG counterparts.
Examples
→
→
Volunteers are expected to correct all trainer sprites on a given article with one edit. Corrections regarding the User:
namespace are only to be performed by staff members of the respective Bulbawiki Network section.
Stage 3 - Termination (Complete)
The third stage of the Trainer sprite project will also be conducted exclusively on the Bulbagarden Archives, and is also restricted to members of the Bulbagarden Archives staff. The final stage of this project consists of deleting the depreciated file redirects created during Stage 1 as well as all replaced GIF format sprites.
It is not necessary for anyone to tag these redirects or GIFs with delete
, as the move log and the respective generational categories will be used to quickly farm all of the redirects and GIFs together.
Thank you to all for reading, especially to those who volunteer. Happy contributing. - Kogoro - Talk to me - 03:26, 1 September 2012 (UTC)

I can't upload.
I have images that Bulbapedia is missing, like the Goldenrod Radio Tower's interior from GSC, but when I try uploading, it says that I don't have permission to create new pages. Please help. Adamws (talk) 19:20, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
- You're not in the autoconfirmed group. You'll have to contribute more in order to become autoconfirmed, so for the time being, you can only request for an image to be uploaded. If you want to request an image to be uploaded, you can link the file from an image repository in the talk page of the file you want to upload, and then the staff will review the file and decide whether or not the file will be uploaded. Masatoshitalk 20:21, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
Ok, and if the image was accepted to be uploaded, would the "credit" of uploading it would go to me? Also, how can I become autoconfirmed with the archives (I'm autoconfirmed with Bubapedia). Adamws (talk) 21:19, 24 September 2013 (UTC)
- By helping out. You can help by checking the To-do list, check what you can do there; tagging files for moving, deletion, categorising them, requesting files to be uploaded... you have tons of things to contribute. Regarding the credit, no it wouldn't; although you can ask for the person uploading it to add in the summary who the original uploader is. We usually do credit the original uploader, but knowing who was the origina uploader isn't really relevant. Masatoshitalk 01:11, 25 September 2013 (UTC)
Preferred alignment for GEN III (and IV) back sprites?
I just added the normal forme Deoxys back sprites from Emerald, and when I re-checked the Emerald shiny back sprite link, I noticed some of the back sprites have the sprite centered in the image (with blank space below the spite's cutoff line), and others have the sprite anchored at the bottom of the image. The two I added are extracted directly from the ROM and have the blank space underneath. I think some of the images are anchored because they were cropped to begin with and then expanded to 64x64 later on. Is there a particular alignment method we should be using for the sake of consistency?
It looks like all the Gen I and II sprites are anchored at the bottom. Do we want to go with that for III and IV as well? Full back sprites were introduced in Gen V so I assume we'd want all of those centered. --GARY-DOS (talk) 04:29, 7 February 2014 (UTC)
Mega Menu Sprites
I understand that Shiny Menu Sprites aren't needed by on places like the typing pages we are currently using their normal menu sprites to show the Mega Evolution types instead of having Mega Evolution Menu Sprites. Would it be worth uploading them since they will have more use than the Shiny Menu Sprites. --Ditto51 16:46, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- I assume it would be hard, due to the fact that the sprite will always be obscured by a held item icon. Pikachu Bros. (talk) 17:10, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- How did we get the Menu Sprites for all of the other Pokémon? Surely if they were taken from the 3DS Game themselves which they look like then surely the Mega Menu Sprites can be retrieved in the same way. And the majority of them probably don't have the item icon in the way of the actually sprite so editing it out should probably not be a problem for anyone who can get them from the 3DS.--Ditto51 17:38, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- I believe it was from the 3DS capture card. I'm saying it will have the icon because if a Pokémon is in Mega form, it will always be holding an item, thus one cannot do so. I could be mistaken if Arceus has all of its types. Pikachu Bros. (talk) 17:49, 6 March 2014 (UTC)
- Whoops, you can see the mega menu sprites in the Pokédex. Pikachu Bros. (talk) 18:31, 13 March 2014 (UTC)

APNG vs. WebM
- WebM is a video format.
- A video is a moving visual image so animated image files are indistinguishable from video files as far as most people are concerned. They're both a bunch of frames being moved sequentially at a certain rate. And how is MediaWiki poor at handling this? Wikipedia and TCRF seem to manage it just fine. SatoMew2 (talk) 16:10, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
- You have to click on the video, have it open up in a separate box, to watch a Pokémon hop around.
- In what world is this a solution and not overkill? --Abcboy (talk) 16:56, 20 September 2015 (UTC)
- Or you can just use GIFs for goddamn sprites. What's the point of using a format that barely anyone supports? If you think people are going to change browsers just so they can play animated images on a single site, then you're delusional.
- TCRF's articles have inline audio and Wikipedia's articles have inline video and audio so your claim that you need to present it as a pop-up UI is incorrect.
- If I may throw in my few cents on the matter, I would agree with ABCboy.
- If you look, APNG is supported by almost all browsers (only Internet Explorer does not support it in any method). Also, before I got an extension to view APNG with Chrome, I didn't know that the moves were actually animated images. Seeing them as static images didn't detract from what I got from those pages.
- Second, looking at the above image, the black square with a play button in it will not work; it looks tacky. If we do allow images in the WebM format, they would need to be images that are absolutely necessary to view the animation to understand the principle or point of a page. Few, if not no images need that.
- As for the GIF idea, the more extensions that we allow in the archives, the easier it is for duplicate images to hide.
- Abcboy's mistake was to use
thumb
instead offrame
, not to mention that using WebM for sprites would be purposeless. - Why are you only focusing on sprites? Move animations, for starters, need to be animated and WebM is a perfect and interoperable solution. Audio would also be a welcome addition since you might as well let people listen to the animation if they're going to watch it anyway.
- Converting the sprites from GIF to APNG was and is a mistake. SatoMew2 (talk) 18:47, 20 September 2015 (UTC)

Autoconfirmation for longtime Bulbapedia members
- I have to apologize for being so confrontational here in this post. Dada (talk) 13:22, 25 January 2020 (UTC)
